Tempura that you see on the photo is not to eat. That’s waxwork – fake food that restaurants often display in their showcases. Food waxworks were invented not so long ago – in the first half of 20th century.
Such food waxworks were introduced by a Japanese businessman Ryuzo Iwasaki. In the end of 19th century Japan opened its borders for the foreigners, and fake-food had an important role: to make it easier for foreign visitors to understand Japanese food. That was especially important since food differs greatly between different Japanese regions and because many names of dishes were difficult to translate into other languages. It was much easier to show than to explain.
We are happy to offer you a unique master-class where you can create such food waxwork yourself.
English-speaking (or Russian-speaking by request) guide will meet you at 12:00 (Japanese time) at Asakusa metro station (exit #4).
You'll visit the oldest temple in Tokyo - Sensoji, here you'll see the famous "Thunder Gate" (Kaminarimon). A busy street with little Japanese shops, many of which are selling souvenirs, is one of the most popular places in the city.
A short walk away there is another famous shopping street - Kappabashi, a street cateing to restaurants and cafes. Here you can find every item that is commonly used at restaurants: from stoves and furniture to signboards and food waxworks.
Here you'll have a chance to create your own food replica: we'll offer master-class of making Japanese tempura waxwork.
Master-class lasts 60-75 minutes, entrance fee, material that's used during the class and interpreter fee are included.
